TOKYO: Japan issued a tsunami advisory for select coastal regions on early Monday following a sequence of shallow earthquakes in the Izu Islands in the Pacific Ocean but it was later lifted after no damage was reported from the minor waves generated.

Tsunami waves, measuring 60 centimetres (24 inches), impacted Hachijojima Island, situated 280 kilometres (170 miles) south of Tokyo. Additionally, waves of 40 cm and 20 cm were recorded in western Kochi Prefecture and southern Miyazaki Prefecture, respectively, as per the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA).

Following the advisory, some coastal regions recommended residents to evacuate, but the JMA, after several hours, confirmed no reported damage and lifted the alert.

In a press release, the JMA stated that a shallow quake occurred around 5:25 am (2025 GMT Sunday) near Torishima Island, part of the Izu Islands, located 580 kilometers south of Tokyo. The magnitude of the quake was not immediately clarified.

Simultaneously, the US Geological Survey reported a series of shallow quakes in the Izu Islands, with the most intense being a 5.4 magnitude tremor recorded at 5:17 a.m.

This recent advisory follows Japan’s observation of a one-meter tsunami near the Izu Islands last week, triggered by a magnitude 6.5 earthquake. —APP
