ISLAMABAD: The Joint Investigation Team (JIT) formed to probe malicious social media campaign against the state of Pakistan and its institutions has found that an organized cell within a political party’s secretariat is involved in anti-state propaganda, sources said on Tuesday.
The JIT was formed by the Ministry of Interior on July 23. The team has started its work and made startling revelations. On July 22, Islamabad police registered FIR No. 654/2024 against Ahmed Waqas.
The JIT probe has uncovered an organized cell operating within a political party secretariat, allegedly working against the state of Pakistan and its institutions, sources stated.
“The ongoing probe indicates that the individuals involved have been collaborating with both internal and external forces to manipulate social media trends, aiming to destabilize the country,” according to sources.
Meanwhile, the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) had filed FIR No. 176/2024 under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PICA) 2016 on July 22, citing similar grounds.
To tackle this serious matter, the Ministry of Interior had constituted a five-member JIT. The team comprises the Inspector General of Islamabad Police, two directors from the FIA Cyber Crimes and Counter-Terrorism Wing (CTW), the Deputy Inspector General of Investigation, and the Senior Superintendent of Police from the Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) Islamabad.
Sources said that the ongoing investigation has unearthed significant details, particularly about the dissemination of propaganda and fake news through various social media networks. The revelations highlight the depth and coordination of the anti-state activities being orchestrated via these platforms.
The investigation is progressing rapidly, with the team uncovering important information that could have far-reaching implications for national security. As the JIT delves deeper, it is expected that more startling discoveries will come to light, further elucidating the extent of the conspiracy and the actors involved.
