DELAWARE: US President Joe Biden embarked on a three-nation trip on Sunday, with his first stop in London. The tour will primarily focus on the NATO summit in Lithuania, where solidarity with Ukraine against Russia will be emphasized, although Ukraine’s NATO membership is yet to be confirmed.
President Biden’s initial agenda includes a meeting with British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak at 10 Downing Street on Monday. He will then proceed to Windsor Castle for a visit with King Charles. This meeting is expected to cover various topics, including climate initiatives, providing President Biden with further insight into the king who succeeded his mother, the late Queen Elizabeth.
Biden previously had tea with the Queen at Windsor in June 2021, during which they discussed key issues that continue to be priorities, such as Russia and China.
Following his time in London, President Biden will travel to Vilnius, Lithuania on Monday night, where he will engage in talks with NATO leaders on Tuesday and Wednesday. The primary objective is to demonstrate support for Ukraine and offer Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy an understanding of the steps necessary for future NATO membership.
Joe Biden Cautions Regarding Ukraine’s Immediate Inclusion in NATO
During a CNN interview, President Biden expressed caution regarding Ukraine’s immediate inclusion in NATO, citing concerns over potentially involving the alliance in the ongoing conflict with Russia. Biden stated that there is currently no unanimity within NATO on Ukraine’s immediate membership.
A significant moment during Biden’s visit to Lithuania will be his speech at Vilnius University on Wednesday night. The speech will outline his vision of a strong America supported by confident allies, addressing pressing challenges such as Russia’s aggression in Ukraine and the climate crisis.
The trip also aims to showcase the importance of continued American support for Ukraine to domestic audiences, particularly as President Biden faces re-election. Recent surveys indicate that solid majorities of Americans endorse providing weaponry to Ukraine for defense against Russia, viewing such aid as a demonstration of the U.S.’ commitment to protecting its interests and allies.
President Biden’s final stop will be in Helsinki, where he will hold talks with the leaders of Finland, the newest NATO member, and participate in a summit with U.S. and Nordic leaders.
