ISLAMABAD: England fast bowler Jofra Archer set a new record for the most expensive bowling figures in Indian Premier League history, conceding 76 runs from four overs without taking a wicket.

Archer achieved this unwelcome record during Rajasthan Royals’ 44-run loss to Sunrisers Hyderabad in a high-scoring match on Sunday, according to BBC Sport.

The previous record was held by India’s Mohit Sharma, who gave away 73 runs from four overs for Gujarat Titans against Delhi Capitals in 2024.

In T20 international history, the most expensive bowling figures were set by Gambia’s Musa Jobarteh, who conceded 93 runs against Zimbabwe last year, while Sri Lanka’s Kasun Rajitha holds the worst figures between two Test-playing nations with 0-75 against Australia in 2019.

Archer’s Rajasthan Royals were hammered by the Sunrisers, who posted a total of 286-6 in the second match of this IPL season.

Highest team total

This total was just one run shy of Sunrisers’ record for the highest team total in IPL history, set against Royal Challengers Bengaluru last year.

Ishan Kishan of India finished unbeaten on a brilliant 106 from just 47 balls, including 11 fours and six sixes, while Australia’s Travis Head set the tone with 67 from 31 balls.

Sunrisers reached 94-1 in the six-over powerplay, and despite some resistance, the Royals could never fully recover.

The total passed 200 by the 15th over, with South Africa’s Heinrich Klaasen contributing a late surge, scoring 34 from 14 balls in support of Kishan.

In response, Rajasthan Royals slipped to 50-3, but a fourth-wicket partnership of 111 between opener Sanju Samson and Dhruv Jurel briefly kept their hopes alive.

Massive loss

However, both were dismissed in consecutive overs, with Samson making 66 from 37 balls and Jurel scoring 70 from 35, leaving the Royals well short of the huge target, finishing on 242-6.

Harshal Patel was the standout bowler for Sunrisers with figures of 2-34, while Australia’s Pat Cummins struggled with 0-60.

Sunrisers reached the IPL final in 2024, only to be defeated by Kolkata Knight Riders, who lost their opening match of the tournament to Royal Challengers Bangalore on Saturday, according to NDTV Sports.

In Sunday’s second match, New Zealand’s Rachin Ravindra played a match-winning knock of 65 not out to guide Chennai Super Kings to a four-wicket victory over Mumbai Indians.
