In the Previous ”Baghdad I” Summit, also held in Baghdad’s closely guarded Green Zone, the participants in the meeting, decided to coordinate their efforts to stabilize Iraq.

The participating countries affirmed their support for the Iraqi people and government and emphasized the importance of coordinated efforts to maintain regional stability.

The “Baghdad II”, is being held at Sweimeh on the shores of the Dead Sea, and aimed at providing “support for the stability, security, and prosperity of Iraq” said a statement by the French Presidency.

The meeting takes place as several European and Middle Eastern countries are mired in unrest and instability in Iraq.

Another concern includes Syria which is a continuous battleground for competing geopolitical actors and Lebanon mired in economic and political turmoil.

Iran has suppressed a wave of popular demonstrations for more than three months, which were sparked by the September 16 death in custody of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old Iranian woman.

The “Baghdad II” is also being attended by the European Union senior diplomat, Josep Borrell, who has been mediating talks aimed at reviving the 2015 Iran-US nuclear deal.
