AMMAN: Jordanian police on Saturday said they had discovered and detonated explosives stored in a residential apartment in the capital and were probing the incident.

The explosives, found in a home in the Marka neighbourhood northeast of the capital, were detonated at the site after evacuating the area, said a brief statement issued by the public security directorate. According to witnesses, the police cordoned off the area.

The statement did not say if it was a terrorism-related incident or if any arrests were made, or about the quantity of explosives. The police said more details would be published once the investigation was complete.

Over the past year, Jordan has said it has foiled many attempts to smuggle arms by infiltrators linked to militias in Syria. Jordan says these people have crossed its borders with rocket launchers and explosives, adding that some of the weapons managed to get through undetected.

Jordanian officials claim that most of the flow of arms into the country has been bound for the neighbouring Israeli-occupied West Bank.

There have also been arrests of several Jordanians affiliated with the Palestinian group Hamas.
