AMMAN: Foreign minister of Jordan Ayman Safadi is set to make a rare visit to Iran on Sunday for negotiations with his Iranian counterpart Ali Bagheri-Kani on regional tensions, Jordanian state media reported.

Safadi will also deliver a message on behalf of King Abdullah II to Iran’s new President Masoud Pezeshkian about the evolving situation in the region and bilateral ties.

Regional tensions have increased after the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh on Wednesday, which came a day after an Israeli strike in Beirut killed Fuad Shukr, a senior military commander from Hezbollah.

Iran and Hamas have both accused Israel of carrying out the assassination of Haniyeh and have vowed to retaliate. Israel has not claimed responsibility for the attack nor denied it.

Safadi would be the first senior official from Jordan to visit Iran in over 20 years. Last time the then-Prime Minister Faisal al-Fayez visited Tehran in 2004.
