AMMAN: Jordanian lawmakers are scheduled to refer their suggestions on agreement the country has inked with Israel to the government this week, for the latter to take any essential action, Arab News reported on Saturday.

The lower house last week assigned its legal committee with reviewing all Jordanian-Israeli deals and making suggestions to the government of Jordan.

The move was taken amid a hardened Jordan’s narrative on the current war in Gaza which, since Oct. 7, has seen thousands of people in Jordan taking to the streets and roads in Amman and elsewhere, protesting at the Israeli assault of Gaza and calling on their government to cut diplomatic relations with Israel.

Lawmaker Fayez Basbous, a legal committee member, stated on Saturday that the panel had already held a meeting with legal experts and was wrapping up its notes on all the agreements Jordan had inked with Israel, before the suggestions were sent to the government of Jordan.

A parliamentary source stated that the “general environment” within the house was “hostile to the deals with Israel.” The legislators “want these agreements either suspended or canceled,” the source maintained.

Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi said that Jordan would not ink the water-energy deal with Israel, citing Israel’s war in Gaza.
