Judicial Complex Riots: Islamabad Police Arrest 198 PTI Supporters as Crackdown Continues

ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad police said on Monday that it had arrested as many as 198 Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) supporters for their alleged involvement in arson, vandalism, and attacks on the law-enforcement personnel, as the crackdown against the PTI continues following Saturday’s riots outside the Judicial Complex in the federal capital.

Intense clashes between PTI workers and the authorities erupted on Saturday as the PTI chairman Imran Khan reached the G-11 Judicial Complex accompanied by around 4,000 supporters to appear before a district and sessions court in the Toshakhana case.

Earlier, a report was prepared which detailed the damage inflicted to government property and injuries sustained by law enforcement personnel during the riots outside the judicial complex on March 18.

The report stated that scores of officials including that of Islamabad Police and FC, were injured during the riots. Most of the wounded suffered injuries from sticks on their limbs while some were affected by tear gas.

Islamabad Police SSP Operations Malik Jamil was also among the wounded police officers. He was allegedly injured due to stone pelting by the PTI workers.

The report also stated that the PTI workers also inflicted damage to vehicles and government property.

In a three-part tweet, the ICT police said the process of identifying all the accused involved in the incident using cameras was underway.

PTI’s Asad Umar files application for protective bail

PTI Secretary General Asad Umar, fearing arrest in the ongoing crackdown against PTI leadership and workers, on Monday filed a protective bail application in the Islamabad High Court (IHC) after cases were registered against him in Lahore.

The PTI leader requested the IHC to hear the protective bail application today. He also got his biometrics verified in the high court.

Islamabad police raid Shibli Faraz’ residence

On Sunday evening, Islamabad police raided the residence of senior PTI leader Shibli Faraz in the federal capital’s F-7 sector.

According to sources, Faraz has been nominated in a case registered by the Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD). They said that the Faraz was present at his house during the raid, however, his wife and mother told the police officials that he was not present. The police team left the house soon after.

Chairman Senate Muhammad Sadiq Sanjrani expressed concern over the raid on Faraz’s house, urging police to respect the sanctity of the veil and four walls of the house as Faraz was a Senator.

He directed the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Islamabad to immediately provide a detailed report of the incident.

A day earlier, PTI Chairman Imran Khan and other party leaders and workers were booked in a case of terrorism at the Golra Sharif police station in Islamabad for setting government vehicles ablaze, attacking police officers and snatching away their official weapons.
