WASHINGTON, USA: Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris holds a narrow one-point lead over Republican Donald Trump, according to a new Reuters/Ipsos poll.

The poll, conducted over three days and completed on Sunday, shows Harris supported by 43% of registered voters, with Trump at 42%. This lead is within the poll’s 3.5 percentage point margin of error.

A previous Reuters/Ipsos poll last week had Harris leading 44%-42%. Harris has strengthened her position as the Democratic candidate in the last 10 days, following President Joe Biden’s decision to withdraw from the race due to party pressure. This move has resulted in a surge of donations and endorsements for Harris.

Voter perception of Harris has improved over the past month, with 46% holding a favorable view of her, up from 40% on July 2. Unfavorable views of her have decreased from 57% to 51%. Trump’s favorability ratings have remained relatively unchanged, with 41% viewing him favorably and 56% unfavorably.

The poll indicates that voters prefer Trump’s approach on the economy, immigration, and crime, while Harris is seen as having a better plan for healthcare. Conducted online in English from July 26-28, the poll surveyed 1,025 U.S. adults, including 876 registered voters.

While nationwide polls gauge voter support, the presidency is typically decided in competitive states like Arizona, Michigan, and Pennsylvania that can shift the balance in the U.S. Electoral College.

Harris and her campaign are currently vetting potential running mates, with an announcement expected soon. She plans to campaign alongside her chosen running mate in key battleground states next week.
