KARACHI: A recent report by Sindh’s Citizens Police Liaison Committee (CPLC) has highlighted concerning trends in crime within Karachi during the month of June. According to the report, a total of 5,288 crimes were reported in the port city during this period.

Among the most significant figures, the report noted that 2,792 motorcycles were reported stolen, with 564 of these incidents involving armed snatching from citizens. Shockingly, only 196 motorcycles were successfully recovered by law enforcement.

In addition to motorcycle theft, 24 vehicles were snatched and 135 vehicles were stolen across various areas of Karachi. Despite efforts, only 80 vehicles were recovered by authorities.

Mobile phone theft was also prevalent, affecting 1,433 citizens, although only 18 stolen devices were retrieved by law enforcement agencies.

The report further highlighted six extortion cases and recorded 40 fatalities due to violent incidents in different parts of the city during June. Fortunately, there were no reported cases of kidnapping for ransom or bank robbery/dacoity.

Despite the transfer of approximately 6,000 criminals to Karachi Central Jail in the first five months of the year, the overall law and order situation in the city appears to be worsening. Citizens continue to face risks of robbery and violence at the hands of street criminals.

In response to escalating crime rates, President Asif Ali Zardari chaired a special meeting focusing on Sindh’s law and order situation in May. During the meeting, he directed Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah to initiate a comprehensive operation aimed at curbing street crime across Karachi.
