KARACHI: Pakistan’s largest city, experienced heavy rainfall on Thursday amidst scorching temperatures that made it feel as hot as 53°C in many areas. The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) reported that by 2 pm, temperatures had soared to 40°C under extremely hot and humid conditions.
Areas such as Sarjani, Yusuf Goth, Khuda Ki Basti, Gulshan Iqbal, Kemari, Federal B Area, Gulshan-e-Mimar, New Karachi, Gadap, Gulshan Mimar, and North Karachi received rainfall. Dark clouds covered parts of Karachi, including Jahangir Road and Pakistan Highway, providing relief after the intense heat earlier.
Thunderclouds were observed in the northeast part of the city. The PMD noted a humidity level of 47% contributing to the oppressive conditions.
Earlier forecasts from the PMD had predicted rain in Karachi and its suburbs later in the day. Meanwhile, the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre reported the first heatstroke fatality, with 31 cases treated at the hospital from Wednesday onwards.
