ISLAMABAD: Vice General Manager of China Three Gorges International Limited (CTGI) and Chairman of CSAIL Qin Guobin said stated that the Karot Hydropower Project is expected to save 1.4 million tons of standard coal and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 3.5 million tons each year.

According to Qin Guobin, the Karot Hydropower Project, which has a total installed capacity of 720MW and an annual generating capacity of 3.2 billion kWh, was executed as a China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) project and will be able to meet the electricity needs of five million people in Pakistan.

This will help in easing the power shortage in Pakistan, improve its energy structure and promote the sustainable development of the local economy and society, and contribute to the global goal of “carbon neutrality”.

Qin Guobin spoke at a “Public Open Day” event at the site of the project.

The participants included Pakistani government officials, members of the project, teachers, and students of nearby schools.

With the theme of “Clean Energy, Karot Hydropower Project around me”, the event helped the participants to comprehend the details of the project and visit the spillway, dam, power plant and other facilities with the aid of videos, on-site visits, and interaction with project professionals.

During the event, CSAIL distributed appointment letters to local employees and launched a video documentary campaign of “China Three Gorges in My Eyes” among the new employees, who had received the “China Three Gorges Corporation Scholarship”.

School bags and stationery items were donated to primary school students while the students themselves drew and painted “Karot in my mind” on the graffiti wall to express their interest in the project.

During the construction of the hydropower project, China Three Gorges Corporation actively took the initiative to fulfill its Corporate Social Responsibility.

They have till now built over 20 welfare projects, including schools, hospitals, and roads, along with the conservation of ecology, and directly or indirectly provided more than 4,500 local jobs every year during the construction of the project.

A total of 33 students availed of their scholarship program to complete their undergraduate studies jointly in Chinese and Pakistani universities. The VC CTGI said the Public Open Day in Karot is a sign of openness, inclusiveness, and integration. It is a true illustration of the China-Pakistan friendship.  –  APP
