MIRPUR: The Chairman of the Kashmir Institute of International Relations, Altaf Hussain Wani, has said that October 27 was the darkest day in Kashmir’s recent history.

He stated that India’s aggressive actions on this day in 1947 are the root cause of the ongoing Kashmir conflict, which continues to threaten peace and stability in South Asia even after 76 years.

Wani highlighted the persistent bloodshed in Indian-occupied Jammu and Kashmir, where innocent civilians are killed with impunity. He criticized the Indian government’s settler colonialism policies, likening them to those of Israel, which have instilled fear among Kashmiris, making them feel increasingly unsafe in their own homeland.

He said that the situation has escalated following the Indian government’s decision to strip the region of its special status under Article 370 of the Indian Constitution. Wani described India’s military occupation of Kashmir as a significant threat to regional peace and stability, urging global powers to take effective notice of the issue.

The Kashmir conflict is complex, involving India, Pakistan, and China, each with its own claims and interests. This protracted conflict has resulted in countless casualties and severely impacted the region’s economy and infrastructure.

Wani called on the international community to recognize India’s ongoing military occupation and to fulfill its role in resolving the conflict according to UN Security Council resolutions. He emphasized the importance of conducting a free and impartial plebiscite in the region, a commitment that was originally endorsed by the Indian representative in the UN Security Council in 1947.
