KAUST Researchers Win Innovative Technology Excellence Prize 2022

JEDDAH: Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture (MEWA) said on Thursday that the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) Photonics Laboratory researchers won 2022 International Date Palm Innovative Technology Excellence Prize.

Dr. Islam Ashry, Dr. Chun Hong Kang, Professor Boon S. Ooi Dr. Yousef Alfehaid and Eng. Abdulmonem Alshawaf were part of the team that won the award. The ministry added that the KAUST-MEWA team won the award during the third International Dates Conference and Exhibition in Riyadh.

Innovative Technology Excellence

The event has provided a unique combination of scientific research and commercial strategy to exchange knowledge and innovative technologies to improve the safe production and commercialization of extraordinary super-fruits.

Dr. Islam Ashry said that it is a great honor form them to receive such a prestigious international award. He added that it motivates them to continue improving, optimizing and advancing this tech to a high level.

The International Date Palm Innovative Technology Excellence Prize recognizes the team’s new fiber-optic distributed audio sensor used for the early detection of red palm weevils in date palm trees.
