ISLAMABAD: Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev called snap elections on March 19 after dissolving the lower house of parliament.
Thursday’s announcement came a year after protests against increasing fuel prices transformed into anti-government clashes that killed 238 people.
Kazakh President Tokayev hopes snap polls will boost modernization
According to the presidential press service statement, Tokayev said he hoped the snap polls will provide new impetus to modernize the natural resource-rich country. Tokayev who has been president since 2019 was re-elected in November last year. He won 80 percent of the votes.
