ASTANA: The National Security Committee of Kazakhstan has announced seizure of 50 kilograms of illicit drugs from Afghanistan with the cooperation of Russian intelligence services.

It stated that the seized drugs were of the hashish type, with an estimated cost of around $500,000 in the black market.

The National Security Committee of Kazakhstan on Friday issued a statement said that the intelligence services of Kazakhstan and Russia successfully blocked a drug trafficking route from Afghanistan.

According to the statement, the joint operation between Russia and Kazakhstan was conducted in August, resulting in the arrest of two members of an international drug trafficking group in the border areas of Russia while they were trying to finalize a drug deal.

The National Security Committee of Kazakhstan stated that investigations into these individuals have started.

Meanwhile, a report by Princeton University’s “World Politics” journal said that the price of Afghanistan heroin in the UK has increased, with one kilogram now costing $30,000, double the previous price. This surge comes despite large quantities of opium being stockpiled in Afghanistan.

Since the Taliban came to power in Afghanistan several large drug shipments have been intercepted in various countries. Many neighboring nations of Afghanistan are concerned about the continued trafficking of drugs from Afghanistan into their territories.
