ISLAMABAD/LONDON: The country’s central bank has announced that King Charles III will not feature on Australia’s new five-dollar note.
Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) said the new design would pay tribute to “the culture and history of the First Australians.”
According to the BBC, a portrait of the late Queen Elizabeth II appears on the current design of the five-dollar note.
The Queen’s death reignited debates about Australia’s future as a constitutional monarchy.
The bank said that “this decision by the Reserve Bank Board follows consultation with the Australian government, which supports this change.”
Five-Dollar Note bank
The central bank said “The bank could consult with First Australians in designing the new $5 banknote. The new banknote could take several years to be designed and printed.
In the meantime, the current $5 banknote would continue to be issued. It could be used even after the new banknote is issued.”.
A spokesperson said that the Reserve Bank of Australia has yet to make plans to change the design of other denominations of Australian banknotes.
They said that it has yet to set a date for when it could reveal the new five-dollar note design.
The King became the United Kingdom (UK) monarch after his mother’s death in September.
As the UK monarch, King Charles is the head of state of New Zealand, Australia, and 12 other Commonwealth nations outside the United Kingdom. The role is mainly ceremonial.
The UK monarch’s portrait has appeared on at least one design in a series of Australian banknotes.
