KOLKATA, India: Junior doctors in Kolkata have concluded their 17-day hunger strike, sparked by the tragic rape and murder of a colleague, in response to the emotional appeal from the victim’s parents.
This hunger strike highlighted ongoing concerns over safety and working conditions in government hospitals, as well as demands for justice following the horrific incident.
The strike was initiated after the victim’s body was discovered at R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9, leading to nationwide protests. In the wake of the strike, doctors met with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who reportedly agreed to many of their demands. Dr. Debasish Halder, a spokesperson for the doctors, emphasized the importance of continuing their movement for justice and improving healthcare conditions.
Despite the government’s assurances, issues remain with the infrastructure and security in hospitals. Many facilities still lack basic amenities, and junior doctors express concern that previous promises of better safety measures have not been fulfilled. The situation reflects broader challenges in India, where despite legal reforms, sexual violence against women continues to be a significant issue. The Supreme Court’s involvement has not yet resulted in adequate measures to ensure safety and justice for victims.
