MOSCOW: The Kremlin on Friday hailed Donald Trump’s comments about Russia’s historical military prowess, including his characterization of Russia as “a war machine” that defeated Napoleon and Hitler.

However, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said that Russia remains pragmatic about the US Republican presidential candidate’s potential impact.

Trump’s comments, reportedly made during a phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on July 19 and later discussed on Fox News suggested him the war needed to be brought to an end.

“This is a war machine you’re facing. That’s what they (the Russians) do they fight wars. They beat Hitler. They beat Napoleon. We got to get this war over with,” said Trump.

Responding to the Trump comments, Peskov remarked, “It might be useful for the American audience to understand that Russia’s history includes many notable achievements. However, many in the US, including ordinary citizens and some political figures, may not fully appreciate this historical depth.”

Addressing a Wall Street Journal article co-authored by former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, Peskov expressed skepticism about the potential implications of a Trump presidency. The article proposed tougher sanctions on Moscow and increased support for Ukraine.

“We do not view Trump through rose-colored glasses,” Peskov said. “He is part of the US political establishment, which is currently characterized by strong anti-Russian sentiment.

During his presidency, Trump’s administration imposed a significant number of sanctions on Russia. While he may have shown some political acumen in keeping dialogue channels open, this does not fundamentally alter our situation or expectations.”
