KSA, Iran Agree to Resume Diplomatic Ties in Beijing-Brokered Deal

RIYADH: The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) and Iran on Friday agreed to reestablish diplomatic ties and reopen their embassies within 60 days following years of tensions between Riyadh and Tehran.

“In response to the noble step of Chinese President Xi Jinping, Beijing’s support for developing good neighborly ties between Riyadh and Tehran. The three nations announce that a deal has been reached between Saudi Arabia and Iran”, the Saudi Press Agency said.

It added, “the agreement includes to resume diplomatic ties, re-open their missions and embassies within two months, and the agreement also includes their affirmation of the respect for the sovereignty of nations and the non-interference in internal affairs of countries,”.

A White House National Security Council spokesperson said on Friday that the United States was aware of reports of the two countries resuming diplomatic ties, but referred further details to Riyadh.

Similarly, Oman welcomed the trilateral statement on the restoration of diplomatic relations between KSA and Iran, Oman News Agency said. The two nations also agreed that the Foreign Ministers of both countries would also meet to implement the deal, arrange for the return of their envoys and discuss means of enhancing the bilateral ties.

Saudi Arabia and Iran lauded the role of Oman and Iraq for hosting rounds of talks that took place between Riyadh and Tehran during the years 2021-2022, the statement added.

Riyadh and Tehran also expressed their appreciation and gratitude to the leadership of China for hosting and supporting the dialogue, and the efforts it made towards its success.
