Kyiv Reports Some Successes in Counteroffensive Against Russian Troops

KYIV:  Ukrainian President Zelensky on Thursday singled out forces in the east and south for their assault against Russian forces and other personnel reported some success in a counteroffensive to reclaim territory from the Russian troops.

The general staff of Ukraine’s military termed a “partial success” near Bakhmut, long a focal point of war. And it claimed Ukrainian forces were making steady progress in their advance towards the Sea of Azov. However, Reuters did not verify battleground reports.

Ukraine has also bristled at what critics in the Western media have termed as the campaign’s slow pace but US Secretary of State Antony Blinken hailed the progress” during meeting in Kyiv on Wednesday.

President Zelensky, in his video address on Thursday, provided some details of operations.

“Thank you forces for very, very good results in destroying the occupiers,” he said. “And outcomes are precisely what Kyiv needs now from everyone.”

Similarly, the United States (US) on Thursday announced a fresh $600 million security aid package for Kyiv that includes mine-clearing equipment, artillery ammunition and demolition munitions.

AFP reported that the help would not immediately arrive on the battleground, as it falls under USAI, under which the US procures equipment from the defence industry rather than drawing from United States stocks.

In a statement, the Pentagon said the new security package will “support Kyiv’s battleground needs” and shows “firm Washington support for Kyiv.
