BISHKEK: Kyrgyzstan’s President Sadyr Japarov has signed a decree officially recognizing the snow leopard as the national symbol of the Kyrgyz Republic. This decision not only underscores the cultural and historical significance of the snow leopard but also highlights its vital role as an indicator of the stability and health of Kyrgyzstan’s mountain ecosystem.

The snow leopard, revered in the culture of the ancient Kyrgyz people, symbolizes greatness, nobility, courage, and endurance. Legends depict the snow leopard as the totem animal of the great Manas, emphasizing its deep connection with the heritage of the Kyrgyz people. Chingiz Aitmatov, a renowned Kyrgyz writer, beautifully captured the essence of the snow leopard and its harmony with nature in his novel “When the Mountains Fall.”

Kyrgyzstan’s Commitment to Protecting Snow Leopard

Recognizing the importance of global wildlife conservation, Kyrgyzstan actively participates in programs aimed at protecting the snow leopard. The Bishkek Declaration on the Protection of the Snow Leopard, adopted at the World Snow Leopard Forum, reflects Kyrgyzstan’s commitment to the comprehensive Global Snow Leopard and Ecosystem Protection Program.

The presidential decree instructs the Cabinet of Ministers to take measures to formalize the status of the snow leopard as the national symbol, ensuring the protection of its population and ecosystem within the republic. Additionally, efforts will be made to popularize the national symbol, develop a logo, and determine its use at both national and international levels.

Various ministries, including Natural Resources, Ecology and Technical Supervision, Foreign Affairs, Economy and Commerce, Finance, and the National Investment Promotion Agency, have been tasked with collaborating to promote the national symbol globally, organize conservation measures, and attract international investments.
