Kyrgyzstan Considers Compensation to Injured Foreign Students After Bishkek Attack

BISHKEK: Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers of Kyrgyzstan Edil Baisalov held a meeting with rectors of 18 higher educational institutions in response to the recent attack on a dormitory housing foreign students in Bishkek, the republican headquarters reported.

The meeting aimed to address the situation and discuss necessary measures for resuming the educational process and ensuring the attractiveness of the country’s educational institutions for foreign students.

During the meeting, which was reported by the republican headquarters, participants deliberated on the incident and explored avenues for compensating the damages incurred by the injured foreign students. On the directives of the country’s leadership, the Cabinet of Ministers is actively considering the issue of providing financial assistance to the affected students.

The meeting also discussed ensuring the safety and well-being of students, enhancing their integration into local communities, and conducting awareness campaigns both domestically and internationally.

Deputy Chairman Baisalov emphasized that the upcoming Cabinet of Ministers meeting would prioritize matters concerning educational and pedagogical initiatives for youth, curbing the influx of illegal labor migrants, and maintaining public order.

According to the Ministry of Health, a total of 41 victims sought medical assistance following the mass brawl involving foreign nationals in Bishkek. The altercation, which occurred on May 13 and contributed to subsequent protests, led to the detention of four Egyptian citizens by the police. The detainees were later placed under house arrest, and a criminal case was initiated under the charge of “Hooliganism” as per the Criminal Code of the Kyrgyz Republic.
