Kyrgyzstan President Extols Cultural Heritage on Ak Kalpak Day

BISHKEK: In a message to the Kyrgyzstani people, President Sadyr Japarov extended warm congratulations on the occasion of Ak Kalpak Day, celebrating the cherished national headwear of the country.

The press service of the head of state conveyed his sentiments, emphasizing the profound significance of preserving and advancing the nation’s identity through language, values, history, and culture.

President Japarov underlined the timeless importance of traditional attire, particularly the iconic Ak Kalpak, likening it to a symbol of pride and resilience that embodies the spirit of Kyrgyz culture. He underscored the indelible connection between national clothing and the collective heritage of the Kyrgyz people, describing Ak Kalpak as a symbol of cultural continuity and pride, essential even in the modern age of globalization.

Highlighting the responsibility of the current generation to honor and uphold the legacy of their ancestors, President Japarov urged a steadfast commitment to safeguarding national values and traditions. He emphasized that the future would judge them based on their dedication to preserving their cultural heritage, urging Kyrgyzstanis to embrace their identity with pride and reverence.

Ak Kalpak Day, established in 2011 at the behest of filmmaker Yrysbek Zhabirov, holds a special place in the hearts of Kyrgyzstanis, serving as a poignant reminder of their rich cultural heritage. The significance of this celebration was further elevated in 2019 when Ak Kalpak was inscribed on UNESCO’s List of Intangible Cultural Heritage, recognizing the craftsmanship, traditional knowledge, and skills associated with making and wearing this emblematic headwear.
