ISLAMABAD: Long queues of vehicles can be seen at the main toll plazas in the region, Jamshoro, and Karachi on the M-9 motorway, as despite clear signs on toll plazas designating lanes, the drivers quite often enter M-Tag lanes instead of cash lanes and vice versa.

An official in the National Highway Authority (NHA) told APP on Monday that despite clear signs on toll plazas designating lanes for the convenience of road commuters, the leading cause of long queues was a lack of awareness among drivers who enter M-Tag lanes instead of cash lanes and vice versa.

Entry, exit lanes

The representative stated that the toll plazas were run by a division of the Frontier Works Organization (FWO), M/s SCORE, and that there were 24 lanes total, of which six were for entry and 18 were for exit.

According to him, dedicated M-Tag lanes for commuters with enough M-Tag balance, low balance choices, and lane dividers with barriers that extend up to 100 meters from the toll plaza have all been deployed to improve traffic management.

He added that each toll plaza has dedicated payment lanes to help travellers who want to pay in cash.

For M-Tag users/road commuters, an Electronic Toll and Traffic Management (ETTM) system with M-Tag Facility (One Tag) was also available, saving time and enabling them to pass through the toll plaza in the shortest amount of time; he continued.

The NHA spokesman recommended road-users use the M-Tag facility to avoid waiting in long lines. — APP
