ISLAMABAD: The 334th session of the upper house of the Parliament faced another adjournment on Friday due to a lack of quorum in the Senate. Following the recitation of the Holy Quran, Senator Kamil Ali Agha from the Pakistan Muslim League pointed out to the Presiding Officer Senator Rubina Khalid about the quorum issue.
Senator Rubina Khalid, serving as the Presiding Officer, immediately called for a head count of senators to determine the exact number needed to proceed with the Senate proceedings. Senator Muhammad Tahir Bizinjo of the National Party sought the floor after the Quran recitation to discuss the concerns of Balochistan rights activists. However, due to procedural reasons, he was not allowed to proceed.
Senator Rubina Khalid, representing the Pakistan People’s Party Parliamentarian (PPPP), advised Senator Bizinjo to be patient and assured him that he would be allowed to speak after the head count.
The Senate session was adjourned and is scheduled to reconvene on January 1st, 2024, at 1430 hours. It is worth noting that at the beginning of each session, the Chairman Senate nominates a panel of up to three Presiding Officers in order of precedence. In the absence of the Chairman and Deputy Chairman, a member of the panel with precedence presides over the Senate sitting.
