LADAKH: Leaders in Ladakh, part of Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir, have issued a stern warning to the Modi regime, threatening a hunger strike if their demands are not met by February 19.
Former Member of Indian Parliament Thupstan Chewang and environmentalist Sonam Wangchuk outlined a four-point agenda during a press conference in Leh.
Chairman of the Apex Body Leh, Thupstan Chewang, expressed frustration over the delaying tactics of the Modi government regarding talks. Despite submitting a draft proposal, the anticipated second round of talks with the so-called High Powered Committee (HPC) was significantly delayed, leading to widespread protests across Ladakh.
Chewang announced a patient wait for the outcome of the February 19 meeting with the HPC. However, if the response is negative or non-committal, the leaders are prepared to escalate protests. A committee has been formed to organize a hunger strike, featuring Chewang and Sonam Wangchuk, until demands for constitutional safeguards and full statehood for Ladakh are met.
Sonam Wangchuk, a Ramon Magsaysay Award winner and advocate for Ladakh’s constitutional safeguards, announced plans for a fast unto death starting February 19. He highlighted the growing desperation among locals due to unfulfilled demands, including protection under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution and full statehood.
A recent massive protest rally in Ladakh saw around 30,000 residents participating, demonstrating historic unity. As leaders brace for the crucial meeting, the looming threat of a hunger strike underscores the depth of discontent and the urgent need for the Modi government to address legitimate concerns.
