WASHINGTON: Leonardo DiCaprio is endorsing Kamala Harris for president, expressing his support for the Democratic nominee in a video message.

“Climate change is devastating our planet and harming our economy; we need bold action to protect our economy, our planet, and ourselves,” DiCaprio stated in the Instagram video. “That’s why I am voting for Kamala Harris.”

A long-time advocate for addressing the climate crisis, DiCaprio has previously supported Democratic candidates. In 2020, he attended a fundraiser for Joe Biden at the home of former Paramount Pictures chief Sherry Lansing.

In his Instagram post, he highlighted the recent destruction caused by Hurricane Helene and Hurricane Milton, describing them as “unnatural disasters resulting from climate change.” DiCaprio praised Harris for her ambitious goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050 and for her efforts to build a green economy. He also mentioned her role in passing the Inflation Reduction Act, noting that as vice president, she cast the tie-breaking vote on Biden’s landmark climate legislation, which passed with only Democratic support.

DiCaprio criticized Trump for withdrawing the U.S. from the Paris climate accord and for rolling back “critical environmental protections,” stating that Trump continues to “deny the facts” and “deny the science.”

With less than two weeks until Election Day, Harris has gained support from numerous high-profile entertainers, including Taylor Swift, Oprah Winfrey, Meryl Streep, Chris Rock, and George Clooney.

The vice president, on Thursday, held a rally in the Atlanta suburbs alongside former President Barack Obama and musician Bruce Springsteen. Beyoncé, whose song “Freedom” serves as a campaign anthem for Harris, is expected to attend Harris’ rally in Houston on Friday, according to The Associated Press.

Republican nominee Donald Trump also has gained the support of famous celebrities, including  Dennis Quaid, Roseanne Barr, Elon Musk, and Kid Rock. In December 2016, DiCaprio and the head of his foundation met with Trump, then president-elect, to discuss how jobs focused on environmental preservation could boost the economy.
