LAHORE: The Lahore High Court (LHC) has ordered an extension in winter vacations in public and private schools and colleges in Lahore as Punjab’s capital grapples with intense smog.
LHC judge Justice Shahid Kareem hearing identical petitions on environmental issues and prevailing smog ruled that schools will remain closed for an extended period from January 2 to January 8.
Winter Vacations
All private and public colleges, schools, and colleges in Punjab, including Lahore, are currently observing winter holidays. The winter holidays in Lahore’s schools started on December 24 and were meant to end on December 31, with the educational process originally scheduled to begin on January 2.
Last week, the LHC asked the School Education Department (SED) to consider extending winter vacations from one week to two weeks in light of the worsening smog situation in Lahore.
Earlier this month, the government of Punjab notified three weekly holidays for private and public educational institutions in Lahore amid the prevailing smog. The three holidays every week will remain effective until further notice.
The School Education Department (SED) notified that all private and public schools in Lahore would remain closed two days a week, i.e., Friday and Saturday. Sunday will be counted as the third holiday, as per officials.
