LAHORE: The Lahore High Court (LHC) has barred the Election Commission of Pakistan from removing Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) head Imran Khan as the party’s chairperson.

The decision was announced on Thursday, a day after the deposed PM filed a petition in the LHC against the ECP. LHC judge Justice Jawad Hassan heard Imran’s plea and prevented the ECP from removing the ex-premier from his position as party chairman. The court sought a response from the electoral watchdog on its proceedings.

PTI chief moved LHC against ECP

A day earlier, the PTI chief moved the Lahore High Court against the measures of the ECP to strip him from his position as party chairperson. The move followed Khan’s disqualification in the Tosha Khana case.

In his petition filed before the court, the former PM maintained that the ECP was exceeding its powers and trying to remove him as PTI chairperson adding ECP issued the notice illegally. According to the petition, the PTI leader had properly revealed his assets before the Election Commission of Pakistan. Khan had requested the LHC to suspend the ECP notice as well as stop it from taking further action before the final verdict in the case.
