SYDNEY, Australia: A British man who went to Australia to become a police officer died on Sunday.

In the incident at his home in Western Australia (WA), Liam Trimmer, 29, cut a carotid artery in his neck.

Trimmer’s loved ones tried to revive him, but he died just before paramedics arrived, officials said.

Colleagues remembered the senior constable as an “extraordinary officer” who also “loved helping his community”.

Commissioner Col Blanch also described Trimmer as a “capable young man with his whole life ahead of him”.

“Everything was done to try and save him, but it wasn’t to be and I know everyone that was involved is really, really hurting at the moment… I think they wish they could just wake up from this nightmare,” Blanch told media.

The police did not release more details about the incident and said that the incident will be investigated by the medical examiner.

The UK government told the media that its staff in Perth were in contact with Western Australia Police.

Trimmer immigrated to Australia from the UK in 2013 to join the police force.

After graduating from the academy in 2017, he moved to Kalgoorlie, about 600 kilometers east of Perth, to work in the police’s gang crime and tactical response unit.

Local media have described him as the “poster boy” for the force, encouraging other young Brits to move to WA, noting his appearance in the BBC series Wanted Down Under, which explores the lives of prospective migrants.

The police union of this state also expressed its condolences.
