LONDON: High Court in London will hear the final appeal to stop the extradition of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange to the United States in February, Western media reported on Tuesday.

Assange, 52, who is wanted on espionage charges has been detained in the Belmarsh Prison in southeast London since April 2019.

He was apprehended after spending seven years in Ecuador’s London embassy to avoid extradition to Sweden where he faced allegations of sexual assault, which were later dropped.

The US authorities seek trial of Australian publisher for releasing US military secrets about the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

According to the Free Assange campaign said two judges in the High Court in London will hear the case on February 20 and 21.

The court will review an earlier decision taken by a single judge in June which dismissed Assange permission to appeal.

The appeal will determine whether Assange will have more opportunities to argue his case before the UK courts or he has already exhausted all appeals and will enter the process of extradition.

The Free Assange campaign founder John Rees said the US is trying to convict Julian Assange under the 1917 Espionage Act.

Assange is accused of releasing some 700,000 secret documents related to US military and diplomatic activities, starting in 2010. He faces 10 years in prison if he is found guilty.
