Magnitude 6.2 Earthquake Hits North-Western Afghanistan

KABUL: An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.2 struck north-western Afghanistan at 0641 GMT on Saturday, the GFZ German Research Center for Geosciences said.

The epicentre, with a depth of 10 kilometres (6.21 miles), was initially determined to be at 34.77 degrees north latitude and 62.03 degrees east longitude, it further added.

According to the initial seismic data, the earthquake would likely have been experienced by a significant portion of the population in the epicenter vicinity, potentially resulting in mild to moderate damage. Zindah Jān (population 10,100), situated 36 km from the epicenter, Qarah Bāgh (population 12,400) at 38 km, Herat (population 272,800) at 40 km, and Chahār Burj (population 11,900) at 49 km may have experienced moderate shaking.
