PETALING JAYA, Malaysia: A joint operation between Thai and Laotian authorities, a Malaysian man, considered a high-priority target for alleged international drug trafficking, was apprehended in Laos on December 29.

Thai authorities had offered a substantial reward of 1 million baht for his capture. The suspect, linked to drug syndicates in the Golden Triangle since 2006, played a pivotal role in procuring and coordinating the distribution of dangerous drugs, including crystal meth, heroin, and cocaine.

The arrest is anticipated to have a substantial impact on the drug trade, potentially reducing distribution by up to 70%. Thai Assistant Police Chief Lt Gen Panurat Lakboon stated that the suspect’s apprehension was a significant blow to drug trafficking in the region. During the operation, authorities seized more than 4.4 tonnes of methamphetamine pills.

The Office of the Narcotics Control Board (ONCB) in Thailand plans to collaborate with Laotian authorities for the extradition of the Malaysian suspect. Described as a key member of a transnational drug syndicate, the Malaysian is among 48 wanted drug suspects believed to be hiding in Laos. This arrest was part of a broader drug suppression campaign aligned with the Thai government’s “Quick Win” policies, aimed at addressing the country’s drug issues within a year.

Notably, the Malaysian suspect was identified earlier as the main figure behind a major drug bust in Thailand’s Ratchaburi province in June 2023. The raid resulted in the seizure of 998kg of crystal methamphetamine and the arrest of seven individuals. Subsequent asset seizures included a plot of land with a building, two condominium units, three yachts, two cars, three motorcycles, firearms, cash, and other valuables across various locations, with a total estimated value of 85 million baht.
