ISLAMABAD: The Indian cricket team faces a huge setback ahead of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, as star fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah is likely to miss the tournament.

Reports from Indian media indicate that Bumrah, dealing with back swelling from the Sydney Test against Australia, will not participate in the league stage.

Bumrah has been ruled out of the upcoming T20I series against England. Bumrah is set to head to the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru for monitoring and recovery. The national selectors are currently deliberating his status for the Champions Trophy, debating whether to include him in the 15-man squad or list him as a reserve player.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will announce the provisional squad soon, with a deadline of February 12, allowing them to keep a close eye on Bumrah’s fitness.

Concerns about Bumrah’s workload have been voiced by several former Indian cricketers, especially after the fourth Test against Australia at the MCG, which India lost by 184 runs. When asked if the team risked overworking Bumrah, captain Rohit Sharma acknowledged the situation.

“There is a risk. He has bowled a lot of overs, no doubt. But with every Test match, we keep his workload in mind. If a player is in great form, we want to make the most of that,” Sharma explained.
