LONDON: Around 100 firefighters, supported by 15 fire engines, tackled a large blaze at London’s historic Somerset House Cultural Centre on Saturday afternoon, with images posted on social media showing flames leaping out from underneath its roof.

The London Fire Brigade confirmed the response on social media, noting that the fire is concentrated in a section of Somerset House’s roof. Images and videos shared online depict intense flames and thick smoke pouring from the iconic building, which stretches approximately 180 meters along the banks of the River Thames.

“Fifteen fire engines and around 100 firefighters have been sent in response to the fire at Somerset House. Crews are tackling a fire located in part of the building’s roof,” the London Fire Brigade stated on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Somerset House, a prominent example of neoclassical architecture, was originally completed in 1796 and has become a significant cultural hub in London. The site is renowned for hosting a variety of events, including summer music gigs and a popular winter ice rink. It has also been featured in several films, including the 2003 romantic comedy “Love Actually,” and has appeared in James Bond films as well as Tim Burton’s 1999 horror film “Sleepy Hollow.”

The official social media account for Somerset House initially posted an update regarding the fire, stating that the site was closed due to the incident. However, this post was later removed. The building’s courtyard, which is used for public events and activities, is particularly well-known and often draws large crowds.

Firefighters are working to bring the blaze under control and prevent further damage to the structure.
