LONDON: Most of the British voters support an immediate ceasefire in Gaza with a prompt end to arms sales to Israel for the duration of the conflict, according to a new poll released on Friday.

Commissioned by the Council for Arab-British Understanding and Medical Aid for Palestinians, the YouGov survey reinforced the results of polls being conducted few months before.

According to the polls, about 55 percent of voters supported the ending of arms sales to Israel for as long as the war in Gaza remained active whereas 73 percent were in support of the immediate ceasefire in the area.

In addition, 40 percent among those who voted for the governing Conservative Party in 2019 were in favor of the suspension of arms sales while 24 percent opposed it.

“Seven months of indiscriminate bombardment by Israel and following siege have wrought the worst humanitarian crisis ever seen in Gaza,” lamented by Rohan Talbot, MAP’s director of advocacy and campaigns.

Dismal Situation in Gaza

In addition, the recent escalating attacks on Rafah from the Israel have further displaced hundreds of thousands more people, majority of them for the second or third time, and pushed humanitarian operations to the brink of total collapse.

The current dismal situation in Gaza took the public in Britian, demanding their leaders to play their part in ending of killing in Gaza, along with end to arms sales to avoid further violations of international law.

The statement for a ceasefire in war torn Gaza was backed by 67 percent of Conservative voters and 86 percent of Labour voters, whereas Just 8 percent of the total respondents opposed the ceasefire.

Both the government and opposition registered low public approval in the YouGov poll. Only 18 percent of respondents approve of the government’s response to the war, while just 12 percent agree with the Labour response.
