MAPUTO: Rescuers embarked on a search off the northern coast of Mozambique after a tragic incident involving a makeshift ferry boat that capsized, resulting in the loss of at least 97 lives.

The converted fishing boat, carrying approximately 130 passengers, encountered difficulties late on Sunday as it was en route to an island off Nampula province, according to officials.

Reports suggest that misinformation about a cholera outbreak triggered a panic among passengers, many of whom were attempting to escape the mainland. Jaime Neto, Nampula’s secretary of state, noted that a significant number of children were among the victims.

Initially believed to have sunk due to overcrowding and structural inadequacies, it was later clarified that the vessel capsized after taking on water, leading to the tragic turn of events.

Menque Amade, a surviving crew member, recounted the ordeal, stating that water began to fill the boat, ultimately leading to the catastrophe.

Silverio Nauaito, the island’s administrator, confirmed that the death toll rose to 97 after six more bodies were recovered from the waters on Monday. Search efforts are ongoing with 12 survivors found so far.

Mozambique, one of the world’s poorest countries, has been grappling with a cholera outbreak, recording nearly 15,000 cases and 32 deaths since October, with Nampula being the most affected region.

Locals explained that heightened medical efforts triggered fear among residents, prompting some to flee, including those on board the ill-fated boat.

In recent months, Nampula has seen an influx of people escaping jihadist attacks in neighboring Cabo Delgado.

The boat was headed to the Island of Mozambique, known for its historical significance as a former Portuguese East Africa capital and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

As the authorities work to determine the exact number of missing passengers, the incident highlights the challenges faced by Mozambique, a nation regularly affected by natural disasters and ongoing conflict.
