KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has broadened its investigation into offshore assets to include another son of former Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad.
Businessman Mokhzani Mahathir has been issued an asset declaration notice by the agency, as confirmed by a MACC spokesperson on January 27.
This development follows an earlier directive in January for Tun Dr Mahathir’s eldest son, Mirzan Mahathir, to declare all income since 1981, coinciding with his father’s first term as prime minister.
Tan Sri Mokhzani has not yet provided a statement in response to the notice. Meanwhile, his father, who served as Malaysian prime minister in two separate periods, contends that the investigation is politically motivated.
The MACC’s actions are part of a wider probe into leaked offshore business records, disclosed in recent years by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists, a global media network.
Tun Daim Zainuddin, a former finance minister and adviser to Dr Mahathir, is also among those under scrutiny.
On January 27, Malaysian media reported that Daim had announced his intention to face charges on January 29 related to the disclosure of assets.
