KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia’s former Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad, aged 99, is recovering well and has been permitted to return home, according to his office.

The news was confirmed by his spokesman, Mr. Sufi Yusoff, who stated that Dr. Mahathir is currently on “home leave,” which allows him to stay at home while still receiving medical care as needed.

Mr. Yusoff did not specify whether Dr. Mahathir has been officially discharged from the National Heart Institute, where he has been receiving treatment since July 15.

Dr. Mahathir, who has a long history of heart problems, was previously admitted to the National Heart Institute in January for an unspecified infection and was discharged nearly three months later. His health issues include past heart attacks and a bout with COVID-19.

Mahathir Mohamad, who has served two terms as Malaysia’s prime minister, first held office from 1981 to 2003, completing a notable 22-year tenure. He made a dramatic return to power in 2018 at the age of 92, leading the opposition coalition to a historic election victory and defeating the party he once led.

However, his second stint as premier was cut short due to internal political conflicts, leading to the collapse of his government within less than two years.

Dr. Mahathir is currently under investigation by Malaysia’s anti-graft agency for matters related to asset declaration. The ongoing investigation is part of broader scrutiny involving former leaders and their financial dealings.
