MALE, Maldives: The newly-elected President of the Maldives, Mohamed Muizzu, who initially vowed to remove Indian troops from the nation, has shifted focus, highlighting the Maldives’ limited capacity for involvement in geopolitical rivalries due to its small size.

In an interview with news agency, Muizzu expressed a preference for a neutral foreign policy, emphasizing collaboration with all countries, including regional powers such as India and China. Despite the earlier commitment, Muizzu now underscores the Maldives’ constrained position in engaging in geopolitical tensions. Presently, around 70 Indian military personnel manage New Delhi-sponsored radar stations and surveillance aircraft in the Maldives, with Indian warships aiding in patrolling the country’s exclusive economic zone.
