WASHINTON: The U.S. attorney’s office for the state on Sunday said that a man was apprehended for starting a fire outside the office of Senator Bernie Sanders in Burlington, Vermont.

Shant Soghomonian, 35, entered the premises in downtown Burlington on Friday and headed to Sanders’ office at the third floor.

He was spraying a liquid on security cameras near the door and setting it on fore, the U.S. attorney’s office said.

Sprinklers went off to multiple floors while Soghomonian left the building through a staircase. There were several people inside the office but no one was wounded, although the door and surrounding areas of the office were damaged by the fire.

It was not clear immediately whether Soghomonian had a lawyer, while he could not be reached for comment.

Sanders is a long-serving independent U.S. Senator from the northeastern state of Vermont.  He also unsuccessfully sought to become the Democratic Party’s presidential nominee in 2016 and 2020.
