KATHMANDU: A 32-year-old man was killed in a tragic tiger attack in Paterwa Sugauli Rural Municipality-2 of Parsa district in Province No. 2 of Nepal on Monday. Police Inspector Ramraja Kesari reported that the body of Manoj Raut Dhagad was discovered some 200 meters from Tharuhati village.
Dhagad’s family became alarmed when he did not return home on Sunday night, prompting relatives to search for him. The police and forest staff were alerted after the family found a blood trail and Dhagad’s mobile phone on Monday. It appears that the tiger dragged the victim approximately 300 meters from the spot where he had gone to defecate on Sunday evening.
“A packet of tobacco and clothing articles of the deceased have been recovered from the incident site,” stated Inspector Kesari. “Prints of the tiger’s paw, the victim’s severed body parts, a bracelet, and a mobile phone have also been found at the incident site.”
Tiger Attacks in Nepal
Preparations are underway to conduct a post-mortem examination on Dhagad’s body. This tragic event follows another tiger attack on Saturday when a 12-year-old was mauled near the Bairiya-based Jira Community Forest. The boy was attacked while walking alone, according to Division Forest Office Head Prabin Bidari.
Nepal has celebrated a significant success in its tiger conservation efforts, with the latest census in 2021 revealing a population of 355 tigers—a nearly threefold increase over 12 years. However, the surge in tiger numbers has brought challenges, notably the rise in human-tiger conflicts and the need for effective rehabilitation strategies for captive tigers.
