CHITRAL: A US citizen, Robert Myles Hall has successfully hunted a magnificent Kashmiri Markhor during the third trophy hunting session at the Gahirat-Golen community game reserve in in Chitral.

Farooq Nabi, a Wildlife Department official, posted details on X, stating that Hall obtained a trophy permit for $125,000. The Markhor hunted was approximately eight years old with horns measuring around 38 inches.

Officials highlighted the recent increase in the Kashmir Markhor population, attributed it to community-based conservation efforts. The Markhor, a species of wild goat native to the high-altitude monsoon forests of central Asia, is renowned for its majestic horns.

Annually, three hunting trophy licenses are issued for Markhor hunting, with 80% of the proceeds distributed among local communities and the remaining 20% deposited into the national exchequer.

Protected by local and international laws, such as the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES), the Markhor’s conservation remains a priority. In a similar event last December, another US national, Deron James Millman, hunted a Markhor at the Tooshi Shasha Conservancy in Lower Chitral district, securing the permit through a bidding process. Millman’s bid of $232,000 marked a record-breaking amount, demonstrating the high value placed on these hunts.
