WASHINGTON: US House of Representatives Speaker Kevin McCarthy on Tuesday called for an impeachment inquiry into US President Joe Biden, an attempt certain to further divide legislators as they struggle to pass law to evade a government closure.
Many Republicans were angry when the US House of Representatives, then controlled by Democrats, twice impeached Donald Trump in 2019 and 2021, though Trump was acquitted both times in the US Senate.
McCarthy Calls for President Biden’s Impeachment Inquiry
Several lawmakers on the Republican party have warned they would make an attempt to remove McCarthy as the leader of the House if he did not take steps to impeach President Biden. President Biden is seeking re-election in 2024. In a press statement, McCarthy has said that he is directing the House committees to open an official impeachment inquiry into President Biden.
Republicans have accused President Biden of profiting while he worked as vice president from 2009 to 2017 from his son Hunter Biden’s business ventures. The Speaker of the US House said that legislators on various committees would begin gathering evidence of probable financial misconduct.

However, the White House has stated there is no basis for a probe and President Biden has also mocked Republicans over a likely impeachment.
Democrats seek to portray Republican impeachment talk as an attempt to distract the public from the legal woes of former President Trump, who faces several separate criminal indictments while running for his party’s nomination to contest President Biden in the 2024 elections. Trump has pushed Republicans to make an attempt to remove Biden from his office.
According to the US Constitution, Congress can impeach several top officials including the president for bribery, treason, and “other high crimes.
