LONDON: Meta has introduced AI features named “Imagine” that allow users to create and edit images directly within their Facebook and Instagram feeds, stories and profile pictures with just a prompt.

These innovative tools, unveiled at the Meta Connect 2024 conference, enable users to generate custom images simply by providing prompts, enhancing user engagement and creativity on the platforms.

Previously, Facebook users had the option to upload various images, including animals or fictional characters, as their profile pictures to safeguard their privacy. The introduction of Imagine simplifies this process, allowing users to generate personalized profile pictures on demand.

Beyond profile pictures, Imagine also assists users in creating captions for their stories on both Facebook and Instagram. Similar to other AI platforms like OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini, Meta’s latest offering enables users to share images in their chats.

Meta AI has been designed to analyze shared images, providing insightful responses to user queries. For instance, if a user shares a photo of a flower, they can ask the AI to identify the species.

Alternatively, a picture of a culinary dish could prompt the AI to suggest a recipe. However, the accuracy of these responses remains to be fully assessed as users begin to explore the feature.

Meta is experimenting with AI-generated content within user feeds, displaying images tailored to user interests and current trends. The Imagine AI allows users to modify their photos in real-time, including changing backgrounds, adding elements, removing objects, and even altering outfits based on the content of the image.

These enhancements are made possible through the multimodal capabilities of Meta’s advanced Llama 3.2 models, which allow for a richer, more interactive user experience.

Meta also plans to integrate these image generation capabilities into Messenger, where users can personalize chat themes by tapping on the “Themes” option.
