NEW YORK: US former President Donald Trump’s accounts on Facebook and Instagram will be restored in the upcoming weeks, Facebook parent Meta said on Wednesday.

The former President’s account was suspended in the wake of the January 6 Capitol attack.

Meta President of Global Affairs Nick Clegg said in a blog post that their determination is that the risk [to public safety] has sufficiently ebbed. However, they are doing so with new guardrails in place to deter repeat wrongdoings, the President remarked.

With his Instagram and Facebook account restarted, Donald Trump will once again gain access to powerful communications and fundraising forms just as he wants to take part in the next presidential elections.

The decision, which comes on the heels of a similar move by Twitter, could also further shift the landscape for how a long list of smaller online platforms handles Trump’s accounts.

It was not immediately clear whether or not Trump will hold the opportunity to return to the social media platform.

Similarly, Twitter restored former President Trump’s account in November after its takeover by Elon Musk, but Trump has not yet resumed the social media app and uses his own social media platform, Truth Social.

CNN reported that Trump’s campaign earlier this month had sent a letter to Meta pleading the company to unblock Trump’s Facebook account.
