MEXICO CITY: Marcela Alcazar Rodriguez, a 33-year-old Mexican actress known for her roles in short films, died earlier this week after participating in a spiritual cleansing ritual in Durango, Mexico, the New York Post reported citing local reports.

The ritual involved consuming a poisonous substance derived from the Amazonian giant monkey frog, a practice known as Kambo.

The actress consumed the gluey toxin, traditionally believed to cleanse the body of impurities and rid it of negative energy. The ceremony took a fatal turn when Rodriguez began experiencing severe symptoms, including uncontrollable vomiting and diarrhea.

Reports indicate that Rodriguez initially resisted medical intervention but later consented as her condition deteriorated rapidly. She was rushed to a Red Cross hospital but succumbed to the effects of the venom shortly after arrival.

As per reports, witnesses allege the shaman discouraged Rodriguez from leaving the ceremony and fled the scene when her health worsened. Authorities have since launched an investigation into the incident, with a focus on the shaman’s role in the actress’s death.

Kambo, while celebrated in some indigenous communities for its supposed medicinal benefits, is banned in several countries due to its high-risk profile.

The substance can cause severe reactions, including cardiac arrest, and has been linked to multiple fatalities worldwide. Rodriguez’s death has reignited debate over the safety of ancient spiritual practices.

Tributes poured in for the actress, who was remembered for her dedication and vibrancy. Mapache Films, a production company where Rodriguez had worked, expressed their sorrow on social media.
