MEXICO CITY: Ash spewing from the Popocatepetl volcano outside Mexico City has led several airlines to cancel and suspend around two dozen flights in and out of the country’s capital, officials said.

The Mexico City International Airport said in a statement that national and global operators have canceled around 22 flights as airplane safety checks having found ashes.

Local officials have warned ash is likely to fall in the states of Puebla, Morelos, and Mexico, as well as in Mexico City, which lies some 90 km from the volcano.

Since Popocatepetl became active in December 1994, following six decades of quiet, ascents have been stopped, a hostel for mountaineers was closed and access near the crater has been limited.

25 million people live within a 60-mile radius of the volcano, and it is being considered one of the most unsafe area in the world, though it has not had a huge eruption in more than a millennium.
